How far is accommodation from school?

Thanks to its central location A door to Italy is easily reachable from every point of Genoa. Our suggested accommodations are always close to the school or in residential areas, close to the sea and not distant from the school more than 25 min. by bus or train.

 

If I arrive late in the evening in Milan, where can I sleep in Milan?

Our school provides our students with special rates for sleeping in Milan. This is a service for all students arriving late in the evening or for students wishing to stopover in Milan for one night or more to visit the town. Moreover, on request, we will supply you with the train-ticket that you will find in your room in Milan.

 

How can I get to Genoa from Milan’s international airports, such as Malpensa and Linate?

By direct transfer with bus from Milan’s airport to Genoa or by shuttle to Milano Centrale railway station and then by train (1h 45 min.) to Genoa.

 

 

How can I get to Genoa?

Genoa is easily reachable from any main European capital. Cristoforo Colombo airport has daily connections supplied by: Air Dolomiti; Air France, Alitalia; Air Italy; British Airways; Swissair; Ryanair and Aerotaxi directly to the main Italian cities and also has daily direct connections to Frankfurt, London, Geneva, Zurich, Munich.. Moreover Genoa is a very important railway junction with its 2 important railway stations: Genoa Piazza Principe and Genoa Brignole.

 

What are the most interesting monuments close to the school?

The old town of Genoa is very interesting from the historical and artistic point of view. At just a few steps from the school there is Via Garibaldi, site of the city hall and of historical ancient buildings: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi. Thanks to the central location of the school it is possible to walk through the main streets of the city centre, in the heart of the old town, discovering ancient buildings, romanic and gothic churches and noble old promenades. Genoa offers a great variety of churches, palaces and noble residences surrounded by wonderful gardens… Moreover at the reception of our school it is possible to buy the Genoa Museum-card that offers free entrance to 20 museums of Genoa.

 

How can I get to the school in the morning with public transportation?

It is very easy to get to the school. We are in the city centre and so the school is easily reachable by public transportation. Just outside the school there is a bus stop of all the buses coming from different parts of the town, the Underground stop (Darsena) and the main railway station of Genoa (Genoa Piazza Principe). While reserving your accommodation we will suggest to students the best way to get to the school from the accommodation.

 

How far is Genoa’s airport from the city centre?

From Cristoforo Colombo Genova’ airport to the city centre the distance is 7 km. To reach the city centre, you can get a taxi or the shuttle coach "Volabus" (tickets on board, 6,00 euro)

 

How far is the school from the Aquarium and the Porto Antico area?

The school is only 500 meters from the Aquarium and the Porto Antico area. The Porto Antico is a large area of Genoa, in front of the sea and with his own yacht harbour, with many tourist attractions: the Aquarium, the Bigo (panoramic lift), the Pavillon of Sea and Navigation, the National museum of Antartide, la Città dei bambini and many restaurants, bars, shops, pizzerias and cinemas.

 

What kind of accommodation can you offer to students?

We offer to our students many different solutions concerning accommodation: our students can choose to stay with an Italian family (half board available), to share an apartment with other students, to live in an Italian Bed&Breakfast or to stay in a hotel from 1* to 4*.

 

Are there some meeting places, such as restaurants and bars close to the school?

Yes, since the school is located in the main university district, it is surrounded by restaurants and bars where it is possible have lunch with a sandwich, pizza or pasta. There are lots of bars close to the school and don’t forget that the Porto Antico area, full of restaurants and bars, is just 500 mt. far from the school!

 

Can the school staff help me to find good accommodation to stay in Genoa during the course?

The school is at student’s disposal to help him find the accommodation that best fits his needs and provides booking directly at the required accommodation.

 

Can the staff of the school organize a pick-up service on my arrival/departure date?

 Naturally! On request A door to Italy organizes the pick-up from station/airport to the booked accommodation at a low price. The driver will wait for student with a placard where the name of the student and the name of our school are clearly written.

 

May I arrive in Genova on Saturday or some days before the start of the lessons?

Of course! Students can arrive in Genoa some days before the starting of the course. It is only important to inform the school about yur arrival date while booking course and accommodation.

 

I’d like to learn how to prepare some typical Italian dishes…

A door to Italy offers students of every level the “course of Italian cooking”: through amusing cooking lessons held by qualified teachers you will learn how to prepare pizza, lasagne, pesto alla genovese, ragù alla bolognese, tiramisù and much more! At the end of each lesson the students will eat with the teacher what they have cooked, all accompanied by a bottle of a good wine! Courses

What should I do to enrol?

Applying for our courses is very easy: You just have to fill out the on-line registration form or send us an e-mail with your details specifying during which time you would like to study here in Genoa. You will be immediately contacted by the school's staff.

 

Do I need any special study-degrees to attend Italian courses?

No, it is not necessary…the only requirement, is the desire to learn Italian!

 

Do I need to speak English or maybe other languages to attend to your courses?

No, it is not necessary to know other languages to study at our school. Groups are composed by students from all over the world and the common language used by the teachers, also at the absolute beginner level, will be Italian.

 

How many students are in each group?

Classes are structured in small groups. The average is 4-6 students for each class. In this way, students can have the highest attention from teachrs and everyone can actively participate to classes. Teachers often use role-play techniques, always permitting to all students to take active part in conversation, facilitating student’s learning process.

 

Is it necessary to have some basic knowledge of Italian language to attend your courses?

Our courses start from the Absolute Beginner level, so the knowledge of Italian language is not required. Students who already have studied Italian will have a placement test, written and oral, during the first day. The placement test helps teachers to verify the student’s knowledge of Italian language and to insert him in the right group.

 

 

 

What is the average age of students?

The average age of students at our school is between 20 and 40 years old but we have students of all ages!

 

Do the teachers speak the student’s language?

During lessons no other language is spoken except for Italian! The “communicative method” is not based on translating; thanks to this method,even complete beginners can easily understand. Thanks to the role-play techniques, art of mime, and multi-media supports, the student without translating from his/her mother tongue, will learn easily and quickly.  Oral communication is preferred but written communication is included as well. Our courses are geared to focus on the four language abilities: listening, speaking, reading, writing. 

In any case A door to Italy’s staff fluently speaks English, French, Russian, Polish and German.

 

 

How many course levels are available?

 Courses are structured upon 6 levels:

    • Elementary I
    • Elementary II
    • Intermediate I
    • Intermediate II
    • Advanced
    • Proficiency

 

 

I wish to study in order to take the CILS or CELI examinations! Can I prepare it at your school?

Surely! A door to Italy organizes training for all CILS and CELI levels examinations.

 

Does the school organize business Italian language course?

 Sure! Please visit the page “courses” and you’ll find all the necessary information.

 

What is the schedule of group lessons?

Classes are held every day Mon. - Fri. Standard group course is structured in 4 lessons a day of 55 minutes each. Half-way through lessons there is a break to relax with other students with a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate! Generally lessons are in the morning from 09.10 until 13:00. Sometimes we have group courses in the afternoon as well.

 

What is the schedule of individual lessons?

There is no fixed schedule. Individual lessons are geared to the needs of the students who can decide to have class in the morning or in the afternoon.

When should I pay the deposit?

Upon confirmation of your enrolment the school will ask you to pay the advance deposit of 30% of the course fee (minimum 100,00€). In case you have also booked accommodations through the school we will ask you to also advance 30% of the accommodation fee. You can pay off the course fee during the first day of lessons, directly at school.

Can I pay off all the total amount of the course fee before arriving in Genova?

Yes, if it is more convenient for you, you can pay off the full amount before arriving in Genoa.

 

What is included in the entrance fee?

The entrance fee is valid for 12 months and includes: entrance test, internet point free of charge, magazines and newspaper, videos and TV, books of the school, other didactical materials, tutoring – one hour per week free - final exam and certificate of attendance. Moreover the entrance fee includes the “student’s card – A door to Italy” that gives the opportunity to get many discounts in restaurants, bookstores, bars and shops.
